853 of the UK’s Largest Li-ion Batteries could replace Coal & Gas for 24 hours!

But it would require investment capital of £170.6 billion!

320MW / 640MWh lithium-ion battery site at DP World London Gateway

The arithmetic is simple: 546,000MWh ÷ 640 MWh = 853 ‘Battery Sites’

853 x Large Utility Scale Batteries @ £200 million each = £170.6 billion

With lifespans of 10 to 15 years (Page 43) that’s an investment of £11.4 billion to £17.1 billion every year — FOREVER!

£170.6 billion invested in utility scale Li-ion batteries would be capable of displacing fossil fuel power plants for ONE DAY, When the wind don’t blow and the Sun don’t shine!

£170.6 billion invested in [80%] UK manufactured Rolls-Royce 470 MW small modular reactors (SMRs), costing £1.8 billion each, would generate over 420 TWh/year.

That’s around 40% more than the current UK’s electricity demand of 300 TWh and well on the way to meeting the increased demand for electricity for BEV charging and heat pumps.

The electricity would be of the 24/7/365, low-carbon variety and these SMRs would operate for their 60-year design lives, with a near-certain (economic) life-extension to 80 years.
